Calci Worms

What are calci worms?

Calci worms are the larvae of the black soldier fly — a naturally occurring insect that is highly efficient at converting nutrients into a rich, digestible feed source. They are naturally high in calcium, protein and beneficial fats, making them an excellent supplement to your hens’ diet. Unlike processed feeds, calci worms are a whole, natural food that supports both nutrition and natural foraging behaviour.

What are the benefits for my hens?

Live Calci Worms bring movement into treat time, encouraging hens to search, peck and scratch for every wriggle. They also supply protein: two analyses of our frozen whole larvae reported approximately 43–46% crude protein on a dry-matter basis. Published insect-meal studies found black soldier fly larvae samples contained more calcium than the mealworm samples tested, but composition varies and our analyses do not prove stronger eggshells. Feed them as a measured treat alongside balanced layers feed.

Are calci worms better than mealworms?

Both live insects can create an active treat time. Published analyses have found black soldier fly larvae meals higher in calcium than the mealworm samples tested, while protein and fat vary by batch and processing. Choose Live Calci Worms for a moving, flock-sized treat that is easy to portion. In Great Britain, dried terrestrial insects cannot be used as poultry treats.

Feeding & Care

How much should I feed my hens?

Feed approximately 10g per hen, per day. Our pack sizes are designed to make this simple based on your flock size.

How long does a pack last?

A 70g pack lasts one hen for one week. Larger packs scale depending on how many hens you have.

How should I store them?

Keep the pouch upright in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Use within 7 days of opening and do not freeze. Bring the pouch to room temperature before feeding for more visible movement.

Are they safe to feed every day?

Our current guide is 10g per hen per day as a measured treat alongside balanced layers feed and fresh water. Keep treats to no more than 15% of total feed, follow the instructions on the pack and make sure every hen gets fair access.

What if my hens don’t eat them?

If your hens are reluctant to try them, give them a little time and try scattering the worms to encourage foraging. If you are still concerned, email hello@thehappyhenco.co.uk and we will review the problem quickly and fairly.
