The short answer
Live larvae are best understood as an engaging complementary treat.
Controlled studies show that hens are strongly interested in live black soldier fly larvae and often become more active or direct more behaviour towards finding, pecking and eating them.
Moderate, controlled provision has generally maintained laying performance and the main physical measures of egg quality. That is useful reassurance, but it is not evidence that larvae increase egg numbers, strengthen shells or make eggs more nutritious.

Best supported
Active, food-directed behaviour
Across multiple poultry studies, birds readily engaged with live larvae. Researchers commonly recorded more activity, pecking or searching directed towards the larvae, or less inactivity.
Supported with context
A complementary source of nutrients
Analysed BSFL batches contain protein, fat, energy, amino acids and minerals, but composition varies with substrate and life stage. Live larvae remain a treat alongside complete layers feed.
Promising, not universal
Feather condition and redirected pecking
Some laying-hen studies found better feather condition or less severe feather pecking. Housing, breed, diet and management matter, so this is not evidence that larvae prevent feather pecking.
The pattern across laying-hen studies
Research is more consistent about attractiveness, activity and the risk of displacing balanced feed than it is about health or production improvements. In controlled trials, portions were often consumed rapidly. Some studies reported more preening, walking, wing flapping or activity on the floor, while others found better feather scores or less severe feather pecking under their particular conditions.
These results are encouraging but not identical. The studies used different breeds, ages, housing systems, amounts, delivery methods and background diets. No trial in the review was conducted specifically in an ordinary UK backyard flock, so responsible interpretation matters.
Delivery method also affects engagement. Scattering larvae, using multiple feeding points or dividing a portion into smaller releases can prolong access and help prevent a dominant hen from taking the whole treat.
What about eggs and eggshells?
What studies generally found
At moderate provision, most live-larvae studies reported no material change in laying rate, egg weight, shell thickness, shell strength or Haugh units. This suggests compatibility with a balanced ration under the tested conditions.
What that does not mean
Neutral egg results do not prove stronger shells, more eggs, darker yolks or more nutritious eggs. Yolk colour and fatty-acid responses varied between trials, particularly when larvae displaced part of the balanced feed.
Why controlled portions matter
Live BSFL are not a complete layers ration. Hens still need the correct overall balance of energy, amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins and trace minerals supplied by their normal complete feed.
In one study, hens given unrestricted access ate large quantities of fresh larvae, reduced their concentrate intake, gained more weight and accumulated more abdominal fat. The practical lesson is straightforward: use larvae as a measured complementary treat rather than allowing unlimited access.
Research does not establish one universal gram amount for every backyard hen. Follow the current product guidance, keep the normal balanced ration available, and observe how access is shared across the flock.
Claims the research does not currently support
The available evidence does not justify presenting ordinary live Calci Worms as a treatment or as a guaranteed route to better production. In particular, this evidence review does not support unqualified claims that they:
- strengthen eggshells
- increase egg production
- make eggs more nutritious
- improve immunity or gut health
- prevent feather pecking
- reduce stress in every flock
- replace complete layers feed
- are proven superior to every other treat
How this evidence was reviewed
This is a structured narrative review, not a registered systematic review or meta-analysis. Searches covered peer-reviewed live-BSFL studies in laying hens, closely relevant chicken-enrichment research, composition studies and UK welfare and advertising guidance through 28 July 2026.
Direct studies of live larvae in laying hens were prioritised. Research using dried larvae, meals or extracted oils was not treated as proof of the distinctive behavioural effect of a moving live treat. Supplier claims and non-peer-reviewed promotional material were not used to establish the central conclusions.
